Driver's side mirror loose - 3rd Gen 4Rnr

Driver's side mirror is loose on my '98 4runner. It won't stay in the open position. I'm thinking something inside the housing is broken/loose. For now I stuffed some rubber materials between the base and the mirror to hold in in open position as temporary fix. My Toyota dealer price is $245+tax for a brand new mirror assy. I'm hoping there's a way to fix it without forking out $$.

Another option is to go get one for $25-ish at a PnP style junkyard. Pull them apart, IIRC the painted parts are separate fromt he interior parts, reassemble your shells onto the new mirror, plug it in, tada.

Great option thanks Jomoka! Is there a step-by-step interior dis-assy/re-assy you or anyone can share?

You could give this a look: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f200.../index132.html

Where Habanero replaced her non-heated mirrors with some junkyard heated mirrors, in the process swapping the painted shells on them.

We had no idea that the mirrors were heated until my lovely wife read the Owner's Manual while bored to tears in the hospital recently.
Too late to try them out this year, but there's always next year...

Have fun, all!
