My name is Tyler and I recently created an account with Yotatech. I believe this is the correct thread, but please correct me if I'm in the wrong place.
I just wanted to make a small post regarding my stolen 86' Pickup. Last fall I was lucky enough to get a pretty clean SR5 86 pickup that had just been repainted. It sat on the original wheels, and a complete blue interior. Within 2 weeks of ownership, it was stolen from in front of my house in San Jose CA. I have done some looking around, and its sad to see how often these trucks get stolen. Within 24 hours of the truck being taken, we were able to locate it off of a back road pretty close to my house. There was no damage to the body and paint except one area. They had decided to take out the sliding rear window in one piece, so they crowbarred it off. They ended up damaging the paint in a couple 1"x1" spots. They also took the original 86 steel wheels with brand new all terrain tires on them, and swapped them off for burner tires with holes and some generic beat-up wheels. Other than a lot of small things like headrests, battery, and windshield wiper blades, they left it alone.
I know I'm very fortunate to have found my truck, but it seems like this lowlife thief knew exactly what they were looking for. I feel they most likely have the same pickup at home that they're piecing together for "free". Just a warning to my neighbors to keep an eye on your truck.
If anyone knows of a good place I can look for replacement oem parts, please let me know.
Welcome to Yotatech, Tyler!
Nice pickup, glad you recovered it.
A place to start searching for OEM parts could be Toyota Parts Deal https://www.toyotapartsdeal.com/
Some of the items you mentioned are no longer available from the factory. Depending on where you live, a "pick-your-part" type wrecking yard will be your most economical source.
Many have apps available where you can see their inventory. They tend to give rather general descriptions, so knowing what year range will work for the part you're looking for is advised.
1984-1988 is essentially the run of that design, but often there's differences between 84-86 and 87-88 on interior pieces.
Toyotas get picked over fast, so getting there as soon as they hit is critical.
Toyota Epc Dta is a good place to get part numbers. You then can check online at various dealers who do on line sales to confirm availability and price. I tend to use McGeorge Toyota. No sales tax for me, and freight costs are fair. There's a plate riveted to your firewall under the hood that has your model number. sorta looks like a vin, but more letters than numbers. You'll need this when looking up parts
Glad you found it. It's purrdy. May I suggest hidden kill switches? One for starter, one for ignition, one for fuel. Then... like this guy does with his FJ40
I dug a post hole next to the driveway, and then cemented in a seriously thick chain with 180 lbs of concrete. Whenever I park it in the driveway now I lock the chain around the front end.
Nice that it got recovered while still in one piece, as most of the time they get stripped down in a couple of days. I'm dreading getting my 86 back on the road after a major rebuild for the same reason. Somebody always thinks they deserve the truck more than you do.
