Sensor on top of water outlet

Hey all,

Was hoping someone could definitively tell me what this sensor actually does. I have seen it referred to as a temp gauge sender, a coolant temp sensor for the ECU, an air conditioning temperature switch (shuts off the AC if too hot?), a 4WD related temp sensor... some trucks have it, some don't, some look like mine, some don't. Which is it? Also, my single wire for it didn't have a connector when I got the truck, so I don't know what the stock connector looks like but I assume it's one of the round off-white plastic OEM connectors. Guessing I can't get a replacement, though?

Here's what it looks like. Opening is too small for a spade to fit inside, prong inside is also too small for a spade anyway. P.O. somehow soldered the wire directly to the post but that of course broke. I found an old female barrel connector and put that on the wire, then squished it until it was roughly spade-shaped. Fits on nice and tight but obviously doesn't seal the connector.
