1990 4Runner real wheels will not engage

I have a 1990 4Runner SR5 3.0L V6 4X4. When I I’m in 2H or 4H you can feel the transmission go into gear but no power to the real wheels. It slowly moves but the. Reva high like in neutral. If I put it in 4L it will move.

any thoughts to why this is happening?

Welcome to YotaTech. We're more likely to be able to help you if you tell us something about your vehicle. I'm going to guess you have the A340H automatic transmission (it's on the sticker on the driver's side door jamb). Your transfer case is part of the A340H, and it's really a small automatic transmission itself, http://web.archive.org/web/201408160...28operatio.pdf How did this problem first come up? (What happened?)

I'm no transmission expert, but from your description it sounds like your Transfer Forward Clutch (C3) is shot. As in, start checking salvage yards for a replacement transmission.

As for the transmission information I’ll have to check. It was recently towed and then it stoped working.

Flat towed? Towed behind a wrecker with the rear wheels on the ground? Completely up on the tow truck? Were the trans and tcase into N if it wasn't completely off the ground?

Hmm if you get under and spin the drive shafts by hand with the wheels on the ground what happens? Both with the truck in N and in D (can try R too).
