86-95 22re to 2l-t/2l-te conversion

Hey guys, I started looking into diesel swapping a Toyota pickup. Does anyone have experience swapping in a 2L-T or 2L-TE into a 22re base truck?
A couple of questions:
- What would be the best year for either a 2L-T or a 2L-TE swap (will the EFI cause a headache with wiring/electronics on early models)
- I'm looking into buying an engine and 5-speed trans package. Would there need to be any modifications with the engine mounts, cross members, or any other clearance issues
- ECU: Can the original ECU be kept? What is different in the wiring harness (I imagine mechanical injection would need fewer mods)?

If I'm missing anything let me know. I really just want to know what all is required to make the swap possible. At the moment, I am not really partial to either of the diesel options or the truck's year but some insight as to the best year/engine combination would be great!

Thanks

In all honesty you will be far better off doing a OM617 swap. More power and better reliability as well as parts availability. The 2l-T are known for cracked heads and not much power.

Trying to stick to running a toyota power train. I know a lot of people recommend the OM617 and the 1.9l STI motors, but it seems like a headache with wiring, mounting, etc. and I'm not all that concerned about the power (more interested in MPG). I've heard people talk about replacing the head with a 3B head that's a little less susceptible to cracking, not sure how good of an option that is. Any chance you have any experience with the ECU and wiring harness setup when swapping to a 2lte? Thanks!

No I do not have any experience with the wiring. If power is not an issue than the 2lte seems like the way to go.
