1986 weber 32/36 4runner struggles to keep up with traffic
I now these 1st gens are slow, and I know 22rs are even slower. However I am struggling to even keep up with traffic.
22re block converted to carb, has a weber 32/36:
Main Jets - 145P / 145S
Idle Jets - 75P / 60S
Air Correctors - 160P / 170S
(Carb was off a 4.0 Jeep motor, nothing has been changed, just adjusted float 2mm lower than stock and relocated bowl vent)
running at about 3PSI regulated off the stock mechanical fuel pump.
Has 4.10 gears on 32x11.5xR15 mud tires.
It accelerates pretty slowly, will take me about 20 seconds to get to 40MPH with my foot to the floor. I've tried to get to 60MPH, but it took a good 60 seconds at full throttle. When I let off the throttle it will decelerate pretty fast, on a flat surface it will go from 40MPH to 30MPH in about 5 seconds. There is kind of a pulsating vibrating noise as I'm driving, I cant tell if thats just the mud tires or not. I've replaced the passenger side wheel bearings, haven't had a chance to do the driver side yet. It also slows down on a slight hill, kinda weird.
Any ideas? My gas mileage is about 200 from full until the gas light comes on.
Heres my 30-40MPH time:
a whopping 11 seconds in 3rd gear.

Here is a list of the stock jets in each carb. I have owned a 32/36 and now have a 38 on my '86 22R. It ran fine with the 32/36 once jetted correctly. Been running a Weber for 15 years or more. I suggest you start from scratch and set it up to fit your application.

How many miles on the engine?? My4Runner at over200,000 miles I can turn the engine by hand with the spark plugs in. Yet it keeps going does not burn enough oil to be a concern.
How much plunder do you cart around that is not needed I can drop 1000 pounds just removing things After a 12 hour day or longer at work.it gets pushed off to later
I don`t even try and keep up with traffic
Manual Transmission Automatics are much Worse !!

My 22re keeps up with traffic just fine…below 70 mph that is. You just have to drive it like a school bus because it is geared like one.
That said, look for a basic problem on the carb like secondary not opening fully due to misadjusted cable or something like that. Or vac leak.

My 87 pickup, 22R, 2WD, still has the factory carb in it. Never been rebuilt, adjusted, other than a few very minor idle speed tweaks after I pulled out most of the smog garbage. It's no race car, but I can keep up with traffic up to about 60 MPH. Above that, yeah, I lag a trifle, but not TOO bad. Like going from 50 to about 70-ish where we have a speed limit change on the highway I drive most. There, once again, I'm good up to 60, then my delta-V slows some. The newer cars and trucks get a little mad at me if behind me, but it doesn't last but a few seconds.
Taking off from a dead stop, I can keep up with traffic up to 60, but in town, the highest speed limit is 50, so...
My 4Runner, 87, 22RE, 4WD, doesn't keep up as well as the pickup does. I always figured it was due to different gearing, and slightly oversize tires. Maybe I'm wrong.
My 99 4Runner, 5VZE, 4WD, has zero trouble with accelerating well. It zips right along no sweat.
Having said all that, I learned the truck's various preferred acceleration rates, shift points, and so forth. I don't care what traffic does, unless I'm nose to nose with some young guy in a "super street racer" he's building up because he watches the Fast-N-Furious movies too much. Then, in the pickup, I do everything it will to walk him off the light. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't, but my 35+ year old, all factory (mostly, anywho), pickup does pretty well. Doesn't do much for the milage, but I sure enjoy the expression on their faces if I keep up with them. My lovely wife yells at me for trashing the mileage, though. Oh well, worth it.
Have fun, all!

well after adjusting the float level to 10mm from top of the thingy (or bottom, whatever part is closest to the casting) and readjusting valves it got a little better. It's still not as fast as my '94 pickup with the 22RE on 33s but enough to keep up with traffic. Oh yeah I put 29 inch tires on it so that's probably doing it. Tires are way too small though.
