My new to me '86 pickup is finally running right!
Bought it for $1500 for motor not working right, electrical gremlins, and rust. The motor had no wierd sounds under stethoscope and the 4wd components were flawless. Previous owner got it in "not running right condition" and had tried to fix a bad timing chain and created multiple issues...
Sorry, no in-process pics due to time constraints.
1) EFI fuse kept intermittently blowing. SOLVED. In-tank fuel pump mounting bracket not securely holding the pump allowing positive terminal to touch hanger and ground out. Used a 6inch Screw-type hose clamp to hold pump to mounting bracket and torqued the clamp to 12 in/lbs.
2) Weak spark on all spark plugs. SOLVED. Negative-battery-post-direct-to-body ground cable not attached due to posts on wrong side of battery. Installed 12in ground extension.
3) spark plug 4 not firing properly ONLY when inserted into sparkplug port. SOLVED. Ground on back of motor was attached under the air injection VSV that is on the valve cover instead of being attached to the rear engine lifting point on the head.
4) Only starts easily when completely cold, runs rough until warm, then tries to die without accelerator involvement. Also gasoline smell from tailpipe and tries to flood out when not slowly increasing accelerator input. HOWEVER, it ran goodish over 2.5k RPMs. SOLVED. Throttle position sensor screw on bottom was missing, so the TPS wasn't holding position. Replaced bottom screw and used a voltmeter and the tables listed at " Toyota 22RE Throttle Position Sensor "
https://www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/TPS/index.shtml ......to properly position the TPS.
