Can't get my 22R shifter knob off for the life of me...looking for tips!

Replacing the shifter bushings on my 1982 22R 4x4, hoping to be able to put a new boot and nob on too, but I cannot get the knob off for the LIFE of me. I used vice grips on the rod and turned counter clockwise with my hand on the knob, used a heat gun, had my bf who is way stronger than me try as well and it just won't budge. I'm thinking maybe a former owner crazy glued it on or something? I've almost thought about sawing it off or taking it to my mechanic. Any tips? Thanks!

Put some penetrating oil in the threads, and let it soak for a while. Keep adding a little every now and then. When you go to break it, a BFH to pound on the knob can be quite helpful. PB Blaster is a good choice, as are WD-40, and so on. Most penetrating oils are about the same these days.
Also, another possibility to break it loose, is heat. IF you don't care about the old knob, you can use a torch, or heat-gun, to get the shaft HOT, then grab the knob and twist. Not with a hand, obviously! Vice-grips are life savers for this kind of thing. It might work.

Or combination of the two.

Good luck to you, however you try to do it.
