I am thinking about buying a 1986 Toyota 4Runner with 244k miles and an automatic transmission. I am going to look at the truck in-person tomorrow. The seller mentioned that the gearbox is slipping and has trouble going into reverse. It might be something as simple as being low on tranny fluid. However, it might also need a rebuild.
It has the 22RE engine. Do you guys know which transmission and transfer case came on the truck? A340F with VF2A transfer case? How difficult would it be to rebuild? Yes, I would eventually like to swap a 5-speed. Just considering my options right now with the slushbox.
Good decision. Even a functioning automatic transmission is not as desirable as a functioning stick shift.
Standard tranny is more reliable, easier and less expensive to fix...
... and you can sell your starter and still be able to run the truck

Hello,
If you are looking and willing to sell your current auto transmission, I am interested.
