So I'm going back to a stock alternator from a GM one. I don't have my original connector so I cut one off a 4runner which looks like the exact same alternator. Both vehicles have 3 wires which are red, white, yellow. The problem is that on my truck the red wire (was not used for gm alternator) is a smaller gauge and white and yellow are larger, and on the connector from the 4runner it's the yellow wire that is smaller and white and red wires are larger... ive tried googling the wiring diagrams but it's hard to understand or find the exact ones I need or follow where the wires are going to what.. I just want to make sure I'm not hooking up wires the wrong way..

You have no direct way to tell if your wire colors are correct (the wire gauge doesn't matter, really). I'd check for battery voltage to ground on each, then I'd pull the Engine fuse to see that red no longer has battery voltage. Then, USING A TEST LIGHT, I'd connect yellow to ground to see if the ALT light illuminates. (Why a test light? If you happen to be on the white wire by mistake, you're connecting direct to battery, and grounding that will be ... exciting. The test light is a sufficient load so that it won't be a short.)
With ignition OFF the white wire has 12.1v and red and yellow wires have 0 although the red wire will sometimes read 0.16v and slowly drop to 0.
With ignition ON the white wire has 11.8v and red has 11.6v and yellow has 7v... then pulled ENGINE fuse and red wire has 0v now (white and yellow still about the same).
Ok and I put the ENGINE fuse back in and connected the yellow wire to ground with a test light and turned the ignition ON and there's no ALT light on the dash BUT please note my ALT light bulb is blown or something because I have had battery and/or alternator problems before and never seen any ALT light lit up..
Also.. just because I'm the "don't push the red button!" type, and also since this is my first time using a test light I bought ages ago (thanks!!), I connected the white wire to ground using the test light and it lights right up!
