What to look for in a pick n pull 22re?

Hello all,
I am very new to Toyota, and I just purchased a 91 2wd with a 22re. Got the truck for cheap knowing it needed a head gasket, after pulling the head I found some severe scaring on the cyl walls, 電eepest was just over 1mm. It痴 a wonder how this thing still ran honestly. I知 at a standstill wether I should continue with this block or source a new one. In my area the cheapest way to get another block is pick n pull. There痴 a fair amount of 22re vehicles in the yards near me. Though I could rebuild an engine I pull, I知 low on time to get this truck on the road and want to try my luck at finding a running engine. What should I be looking for as far as black flags? I have a borescope, compression tester and most basic tools. Thanks all ✌🏼

Can you bring a battery and compression tester. Spin them over in the yard and see if you can find one with good compression. Probably drop in for the most part. Some sensors might need to be figured out but should be fairly easy swap.

Just an idea. Dropping in a probable running engine might be your fastest most cost effective way. But them again you might still need to rebuild it.

When I did mine I bought a preassembled head. I dropped my block off at a shop and they called me when the crank was back. They checked the rods and bored the cylinders. Bought my rebuilt kit from them as well. Went together quickly in the scheme of things.

Definitely saved me a few bucks but not a ton. Also was a bit quicker for me to do it vs. waiting for a reputable shop to get to me. Honestly, if you don't want to drop a used motor in I would price out a self rebuild vs. a ready to drop in swap from a well known legit place. Anywhere between 1200-2500 bucks from what I have scene.

I can bring a battery, I知 mostly interested in checking the health of the engine through a compression test so I don稚 waist money on an unserviceable block. Even if I find a pretty cherry engine I think I値l bring it to a machinist to clean it up like you did. How much was it to have your crank turned and block cleaned up? I have a re-manufactured head as well so all together it would make a pretty good engine. I知 weighing out full rebuild vs throw a potentially cherry strait in.

I think by the time I was done it was a complete rebuild using the parts I wanted for about the price of an unknown CL builder. If your taking it to a machine shop they are probably going to tell to rebuild the whole thing or run it. To disassemble the entire bottom end just for inspection is about the same cost as an entry level rebuild.
