Centerlink/Steering damper fitment

1990 Pickup DLX V6 2WD W/power steering

So I ordered MOOG steering damper #SSD106. Upon receiving it I realized that it was not the same as the original in that the centerlink and on the original had a ball joint and the new one had a fixed tapered stud. I was told that replacing the original ball joint one with one with a fixed stud will not be an issue. Can anyone confirm this?

Also even if it is acceptable to replace the ball joint one with a fixed one the tapered stud did not in fact fit the original centerlink.

So I guess my question is can anyone confirm that a fixed one will work just fine without any issues and if so does anyone know which part number will have the right size tapered stud to fit my original centerlink. Having a little trouble finding specifics on this.

Thanks in advance

I installed a Monroe Gas-Magnum replacement steering damper (2nd replacement) on my 2WD 1986 and it had the tapered bolt attachment to the center link bar, as did the previous replacement one. Have never had an issue with either one. I was hesitant abut non-ball joint tapered bolt too on the 1st replacement. T There is plenty of play in the bushing at both ends to account for any movement. Never had any fail of the bushings on either damper.

Thanks JoeS.

I'll probably just use a grinder to clearance that chunk of iron then. Maybe a couple of mm. Deadline to return is next week, but gots to head south to go see 'me mum'.

Don't grind it off. It's looks bolted on, so just unbolt it, then save it in a box for old/used/extra parts. You may one day find out what it's for.
