Looking at a 1990 Toyota 4x4
This is my first ever post, hello to all. I’ve been wanting a pre 94Toyota 4x4 for ever and have looked seriously a few times but never found one.
I currently have my eye on a single cab 90 4x4 22r and the mileage is unknown. It has some kind of instrument
Cluster that did not come factory. It has white background gauges and shows 114,000 miles. Owner says the guy he
Bought it from claimed it was close to accurate. Truck looks nice and is fairly rust free with a small spot in the very front of the
Passenger rocker, just surface at this point. The engine sounds great and I couldn’t hear and valvetrain noise I normally
Hear in other higher mileage trucks so perhaps mileage is close to accurate.
It has been painted and has Mickey Thompson wheels and tires. Tires are worn and to big for me anyway so they
Gotta go. Also needs a new muffler, the factory exhaust is still intact but is coming apart at
The muffler. I’ve looked and looked and this is the best I’ve found in my price range which started at 3,000 and moved up
To 5,000 after looking for a few months. This one is 5,000 firm. I am having a real hard time parting with 5k on a
Truck this old but really want a Toyota bad. It looks to be fairly stock and the interior is actually really nice as well.
Is 5k to much for a pretty much rust free 90 single cab?? I’ve looked so long and anything cheaper needs a ton
Of work but anything nicer is 8k plus. Figured I’d ask you all what you think. I’m in northern Ky right in middle of
The rust belt, the truck is in Indiana and no idea how it has survived. AC does not work which sucks. Lol seems to
Have better power than the last 22r I owned which was 2wd. I figure if I flew west to drive one home I’d end up
Spending a grand in flight/gas to get home but do see decent deals that way. Am I paying to much for a decent
1990 yota 4x4??

Admin I’m very sorry I put this thread in the wrong place, I did not mean to put it in the 84/85 trucks. Meant to put it in the 86-94.5 section. Is there any way this can be moved to the proper area??

I also have a choice on a 94 ex cab with the air still working and condition is good also but it’s 6000/6500
So I’m not sure which truck would be best. Are the ex cab worth more ??

Is it 2WD, or 4WD? What engine does it have? 22R, 22RE, 3VZE...? Turbo? What shape is the engine in? How many miles on the truck, and only on the engine, if it's been rebuilt or replaced? Has the head gasket been replaced recently? If so, what else did they replace? What about the normal High Time type items, like the O2 sensor? Is the exhaust system stock, or been modified?
How about the fluids? When was the coolant replaced, and with what? Does it run cool, hot, in the middle? How about the thermostat? Is it the two-stage or just an average Stant sort? When was the last oil change, and with what brand and weight oil? How about the transmission fluid? Manual or automatic tranny? Has the oil in the punkin, and transfer case, if applicable been changed, and if so, when?
What shape is the frame in? What shape is the body in? What condition is the interior in? What extras have they added, and how good a job did they do? Like if the radio/sound system been changed, is it a professional job, or is there a wad of wires just twisted together? Same for any other wiring problems that may have been repaired. Has the repair been done professionally, as in crimped/soldered and heat shrinked?
Will they let you go on a test drive? If so, how does it feel? How does the engine perform? Is the steering loosey-goosey, or nice and firm? How's the transmission feel when it shifts, or when you shift it?
You see? It's more, MUCH more, than just xtra-cab or not. Did they love their Toyota truck, or did they just beat it to death and try and gouge an unsuspecting customer that doesn't know what to look for?
The list goes on. I'm certain that the real pro's on here will have many more things to watch for.
I hope this is a little help. Oh, BTW, I don't know how, other than a mod noticing it, to get the thread moved either. Maybe start a new one in the right place, cut-n-paste everything over, and delete this one? I just don't know...
Good luck to you!

Well I should have specified assuming both to be in similar shape same engine etc, are the x cab trucks higher demand than regular cab. I always wanted shortbed regular cab for the short wheelbase giving better ground clearance without having to lift the truck to the moon. Lol but after I started looking I was questioning which was in the highest demand. I seen more x cabs than Reg cabs. And I just assumed everyone new both were 4x4 being the 4x4 would be a better choice with either cab.Lol
I ended up going with what I always wanted which was a regular cab short bed. Wow these trucks are just so cool. I forgot how small they were. So many people spending 15/20 grand on side by sides when there’s these little yotas that I myself would consider superior in every aspect. But I do realize with side by sides it’s different your not actually in a cab which is really cool I’m sure. It’s just when I first started driving my Toyota I thought wow it’s so small I feel like I’m in a side by side. Lol. I’m used to driving a full size conversion van. Lol
Ended up with a 1990 Toyota 4x4 Reg cab and I absolutely love it. I have so much to do to it and am loving it. First I will change all fluids. It currently has the green antifreeze in it so I’m getting that out ASAP and putting the Toyota stuff in. Going to have to flush it extremely well.
