Head Gasket Troubles

Hi all

So, I just finished doing a head gasket job on my buddies 1984 4wd pickup (22r). Usually I work on Nissan/Honda, but he's a good friend so I dove in. The Carb is a weber (I can't find much information on it, but it's the one from this video
) Anyway. I sent the head in to be serviced (full job, replaced all of the valves etc.) I marked the timing chain/crank at top dead center when i took it off, and made sure that it went back on the same. I spaced the valves at what the book recommended (.02mm for intake and .03mm for exhaust) and put it all back together... and attempted to start it up and the truck isn't starting (when i turn it on it goes to about 400rpm, I can rev it to keep it alive, but flames occasionally pop out of the carb) I'm at a bit of a loss at what the next step to take is. I didn't mess with the carburetor at all (I just disconnected the intake manifold from the head, and left everything intact on that side otherwise.)

It should also be mentioned that while my friend took the truck to a shop, and they told him he needed a head gasket replacement.... the head gasket was fine. The problem was the intake gasket was blown in a couple places, which had caused the oil/antifreeze to mix.

Anyway. I don't know what my next step is... my thought is to take apart the carb and see if something is going on there, but I can't find any information on it.... and that might not even be the correct next step. Any advice would be hot.

Twenty thousandth and Thirty thousandth, are you sure about what you typed?

I'd have to dig out a book but I'm pretty sure you are strangling that poor little 22r series. From memory its more like 0.008 and 0.012 eight and yweleve thousandths.

Then we can talk about your cam timing, crankshaft keyway and cam dowel go in the twelve o'clock position? But honestly I stopped reading at you valve clearance numbers..

.2mm and .3mm would be about right. Not .02mm and .03mm

Sorry I wrote it wrong. I did do it at .2mm on the intake and .3mm on the exhaust. I followed the manuel which is what said to do it that way, but when writing this I did not have that book with me.

You asked what to do next and didn't get a direct answer.

Verify timing of both the cam and ignition, if those are to spec you might revisit the rocker clearances before running a leak down test to insure the valves are closed when they should be.

Oh PS! And the firing order and lead routing cause that's easy and free.
