So I got this 1992 Toyota 4runner for free, pretty much saved it from the scrapper (out of province inspection, rear links so rusty they were broke off the frame) The original plan was to just tromp it till it died, but of course being that its a Toyota the ˟˟˟˟er just wouldn't die. and continued to rack up the kms as a bush pig/beach buggy. Pulled a 3rd at the mud drags against v8s. My cousin wanted to squish ˟˟˟˟car at the end of the race just for the crowds amusement. I just couldn't let that happen, it was a good truck, 4x4 worked, heater worked, ran like a raped ape... still lots of life left in the ole gal even if she was never going to be back on the open road.
DISCLAIMER
I want to say before you even scroll down that this is as, backwoods, redneck, cheap, built out of scrap as it gets. It was never meant to be a drag car or even to make safe power as a daily driver. This build was a "well ˟˟˟˟ I think I can make that work" kind of project and with that in mind carry on and enjoy the fun.
lots of adventures put on a good 1000k after it had been written off as junk
took some punches, best part about a free car destined for the yard, you just go and dont worry.
˟˟˟˟cars first form, mud drags ready!
still has some life left in the old girl
choices were made Diving in I bought the cheapest ebay turbo kit I could find, having no idea what I was doing.
ebay T3/T4 combo internally wastegated at 12psi next to a cummins 5.9 turbo
tear down. It promptly blew up on 12psi after taking it out for a longer test run and getting too hot. bet no one guessed that one at the beginning... The head gasket was still intact upon inspection but the head studs had stretched and allowed the heads to lift. it was burning coolant like no tomorrow, big plume of gray smog from the exhaust. doneskies. You want to thrash on your ˟˟˟˟ you better figure out how to fix it, out comes the ole Haynes.
cleaning and prepping plug welding all the holes in the intake. I used a vac pump off of a ford diesel, to keep the 4x4 and brakes working.
minor chipping from some pre-det The damage was not as bad as I thought it would be for some hard 16 17 and up AFRs under boost.
washing parts in the dishwasher, no I'm not single my GF is just a champion.
all that work might as well make some of it pretty
ARP head studs
MLS headgaskets
the fun parts, putting all the bittys back
intercooler and piping
where many 3VZE engines go to die
but not this one, added some 4hole injectors while I was in there as well as a FMU and two extra injectors plumbed on either side of the cold start injector, I was originally using the cold start injector only to spray more fuel under boost using a 3-4 psi Hobbs switch, but it seemed to be insufficient for the amount of boost we were making. Added half a fuel rail and a couple injectors from a ford v8 and now she chooches.
CV axle blown up. it makes power...
˟˟˟˟cars final form.
next!!
just kidding I dont just rape old 4runners for fun, I also like to save them and make them minty fresh.
bonus shot of my 82 PU just for scrolling the whole way down
I hope you enjoy! now get out there and go work on a Toyota, and possibly learn some ˟˟˟˟!
This was an enjoyable post to read. Do you think you'll get more reliability out of the MLS+ARP gaskets/bolts combo with the turbo? I'm considering putting a set of those on my 3vze as well. Haven't wanted to turbo because I can only find blown engines with 3vze turbo set ups! Very good work and I love the "figure it out" attitude.
