88 Toyota 22RE auto trans leak

I have a leak at rear tail shaft housing ! I replaced the seal years ago ! It’s back and now I’m wondering if there is another probable cause I’m overlooking ? I checked u-joints and seem fine ! There’s no vibration when driving the truck ! When I noticed oil I checked trans mount and it looked worn ! I replaced it ! Not sure if that was original problem and damaged seal ! Neighbor who is mechanic but not on Toyota’s said there might be a brass bushing or similar part on out put shaft that could be worn , causing it to have movement ! Any info I’d appreciate !
Dan

On the 2wd there will probly be a brass bushing that the yoke rides in. This is how the 2wd manual transmissions are. That bushing could be worn but it's not likely. Did you use a Toyota seal last time? Is the dust shield that goes around the yoke still in place?

Went to Napa to try another seal ! The factory seal from Toyota has 2 pieces ! The seal and a felt like material piece ! One from Napa only had the seal itself and not the felt piece ? Gonna have to wait and find right seal !

It is relatively common for the Toyota pickup-based RVs to have worn output bushings, but seems less common in the (much lighter) pickups.

You can search and read more about this on http://toyotamotorhome.org/forums/

Here are some posts I have read in the past about this issue:

http://toyotamotorhome.org/forums/in...sing-bushings/

http://toyotamotorhome.org/forums/in...-transmission/

I have a leaking output seal too, and have bought the new Toyota Seal Kit for it, but have not gotten around to fixing it yet. From what I read, the bushing should be okay if you don't have significant play between the driveshaft and the extension housing. If your bushing is bad, you will have to remove the extension housing to get to it and press a new one in. I have no idea if the manual transmission bushings work on the A43D, but one of the threads I linked above has a Toyota part number if you need it.

I installed factory bushing and oil seal ! The bushing was worn ! I took to machine shop and had him remove seal and bushing ! Took him a while to remove the bushing ! Btw the factory Toyota seal is two pieces ! Most auto parts stores sell seal that is just one piece ! Service manual states installing two pieces for the seal ! This info was taken from service manual !

Sweet!

How many miles are on the truck?

It looks like I am probably going to do the same as you in the not too distant future.

Mine had 113 k !i would check it out ! If your going to replace the seal I would consider replacing the bushing ! I took mine to a machine shop to have it taken out and new ones pressed in ! Only charged me 20$ well worth it

The way I was told to check out condition of bushing was to see if driveline has much movement ! I was able to grab driveline at u-joints and move up and down and side to side ! Mine had movement ! Now that I’ve replaced it the movement is gone !
Hope that helps you !
