You can install bigger valves, port and polish the head, add a more aggressive camshaft, add a turbo, use a standalone ECU, larger injectors, larger exhaust, larger bore throttle body, etc .
However, you have to do a lot, and spend a lot, to get a decent boost of power over stock, while staying reliable.
In the end, the gains for a mild to moderate build does not give you much more power. You still won't be towing camping trailers up a hill at 80mph.
I am not trying to discourage you at all, just making sure you are not expecting double the horsepower from a bolt on part.
How much more power are you trying to make over stock?
What is your expectations of the engine when finished?
What do you planning on using your truck for? Are you just having fun with a project vehicle?
Feel free to search YotaTech as many people have done performance upgrades in the past. Use the "Google" search instead of the "Threads" or "Posts" search at the top of the page.
Have fun reading through threads and see what is right for you.
You can check out 22RE Performance or LC Engineering for reliable 22R-E power modifications. Both companies specialize in rebuilding 22R-E (and other) Toyota engines.
Some decide that an engine swap would be easier and/or better. The most popular engine swap is the Toyota 3.4L 5VZ-FE V6 engine.
