Transmission slips and howls between 2nd and 3rd gear...do i need a rebuild???

Hi Guys,

I have a 1987 4runner turbo automatic with 240k miles on the original engine and trans....according to the previous owner when I bought this truck 16 years ago.

From the beginning, I noticed that the trans would shift from 1st to 2nd then slip and a howling noise then go into 3rd.

The tach would rev up normally in 2nd gear and and then drop to 750 rpm and then when it would shift into 3rd it would rev normally.

After reading and searching it sounds like it could be solenoids but the OD light is blinking the code for both speed sensors...at the case and in the cluster.

I changed the speed sensor at the case about 10 years ago and it really didn't do anything.

Fast forward to today...I want to make this more reliable and hopefully my daily driver. but I don't want to spend a ton of money on a complete trans rebuild.

Changed the fluid recently and it looked dirty but didn't see anything unusual in the fluid.

Any thoughts?

Thank you for any and all advice.

A video of the dash when this is happening would go a long way.

You can test the SPD signal at the dash output and at the two inputs (one on the ECT and one on the ECU)

I'm a little confused by your reference to changing the speed sensor, as I was pretty sure these all had a cable driven speedo (like my 86) and the cluster output the SPD signal for the ECU and ECT.

There are tests such as the manual shift test and line pressure tests that can narrow in on the problem. It really kind of sounds like a worn out clutch band (pretty sure that's the right term)

Actually I changed the speedo cable to the cluster and also changed the speed sensor at the case.but it did not help solve the problem.

Let me see if I can get a video...
