I had to remove the fuel tank inspection cover that's under the rear seat area in my '87 4Runner, and I now need to re-seal it. The original sealant was black and a bit like rubber cement -- what have people used to re-seal that cover? The original goo wasn't salvageable.

 

You'll find this sealant in the bits and pieces repair section of the local auto parts franchise, it's the same stuff that hold the vapor barrier under your door panels and is sold in a multipack of sticks.

 

Look for butyl rubber sealant

 

Home Depot keeps it in stock. A fifty foot roll costs around $5. Look in the roofing supplies for butyl rubber sealant tape.

 

For reference, I used this 3M product and it worked quite well. I now have enough for several lifetimes, though.
