Hi all,
Still working on my 92 4wd 4Runner, just working on small stuff to make it better looking.
Question 1 is, do you have to take the bumper apart to put it on? What part do you remove, the end parts or just the center mounting brackets. Also, do you remove the black cover on it?
Question 2, My spare tire hanger is messed up and would like to take it off and fix it. Is there a way to remove it with the body on? There are 4 bolts that hold it on the frame but they are bolted from the top of the frame and I can't get a wrench on them. Seems the only way to reach the bolts that hold it on to the frame is to raise the body off the frame to get access to the bolts. This sound right?
Some pics
Thanks
it is possible to get the spare tire mech off without raising the body. I did mine ......... but it is a major pain! my frame and bolts were really clean too (no rust)
Even with mine on a lift and clean, i probably spent an hour removing those bastards!
Well, I gave it a try and can't even get the wrench in to loosen the bolts. I was going to swap out the lifter with the one on my 94 parts truck but they are different. The 94 parts truck is a 2wd auto and the 92 is a 4wd stick, so I have to try and rebuild this one. I think I've given up on trying to raise the cab, I just might drill some holes in the rear of the cab to access the bolts and do it from inside. Then I could just plugs the holes. The trick is to get good measurements to drill the holes.
Another project done
Managed to replace the rear bumper with the one off the 94 parts truck. What a PIA.............. 92 bumper was damaged so I guess it kinda tweaked the brackets and frame a bit. I ended up taking the bumper all apart, 3 pieces, and put on the brackets to the frame and then hung the bumper, then the end pieces. All went back together but everything had to be finagled. Glad it's done
I also removed the spare tire mechanism and the linkage. Ended up drilling holes in the bed to get the bolts out, worked out pretty good. The linkage had a sheared roll pin besides being rusted and the cable on the mechanism was freiad. Took the one off the parts truck and took both mechanisms apart and cleaned them up. I ended up just swapping out the cable from the parts truck because the mechanism brackets were different. All went back together and now I have a functional spare tire holder.
