How advanced are you setting the timing? What octane are you running? Sea level?

I'm at sea level (NJ) and only use Shell 93 in a completely stock 22RE, down to the air cleaner. Seems I should be advancing it closer to 10-15 degrees based on what I have read here. Wondering what everyone else with a similar situation is setting their timing at?

I know it doesn't sound very technical... but i set my timing where my motors seem to like it the best... for optimal performance... whether that's 10, 12, 18... whatever it likes... make sense? It has always worked well for me...
i usually start a little retarded because i can tell from performance stand point that it's sluggish... work my way up from there... takes a few times to get it right but worth taking the effort to do it...

 

Is it pinging when you fill with regular? A healthy, stock 22re runs as good or better on 87 octane as it does on anything else. Jumper the diagnostic port to put it in base timing mode and set your timing from there. 5° advanced will usually run best, which becomes around 12° at idle in normal-running mode.
