Hey all, i have a 1986 truck with the carbed 22r, this thing just downright refused to idle and seems like its flooding out, its all bone stock and it hasnt been driven much in the past few years but now its my new wheeling project and daily, you have to hokd the gas pedal to get it to idle and even then its pretty rough, whwn i push the clutch in to come to a stop its sometines just dies or otherwise idles really rough and wants to die, its also rolling quite a bit of smoke and we can tell its running rich, once driving and under load its all good but idling and taking off is hell, sometimws it will clear up and idle fine but thats after maybe an hour of drive time, were thinking it might have something to do with the electric choke? Any other ideas?

 

Just take off the air filter when it's acting up hot engine to see if the choke plate is closed. If it is, you should be able to disconnect the choke, and then wire open the choke plate. Will have to foot warm it on cold starts.

 

A few questions:
How long have you had the truck? How long has it been doing what you described?
Did you, or anyone, do any work on it before the problem started? Like maintenance
Have you checked the plugs for fouling? Are they very old or??
