Igniter part number for a 1985 T4R 22re motor

We own a 1985 T4R with an 22re motor. The igniter (ignition control module) needs to be replaced, but there are two different modules listed in the Toyota Parts Catalogue for the truck's VIN, neither of which is currently installed in the vehicle. Each of these two listed igniters has its own unique part number. One unit has a sticker that says part no. 89620-35160 & Mark 053. The other unit has a sticker that says part no. 89620-35170 & Mark 065. Our questions are as follows. What does "Mark" refer to? How do we determine which of the two igniters is the correct fitment?

Well, this won't help you much.

https://parts.lakelandtoyota.com/p/T...962035140.html (a dealer in Florida) says that 89620-35160 is discontinuted, 89620-35170 doesn't match anything, and the correct part is 89620-35140 . At $400.

RockAuto lists an Airtex after-market unit https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/...ule+(icm),7172 for $150. But the cross-reference is to 89620-35170 "mark 65".

I have no idea what "mark" refers to. I would be tempted to give Lakeland Toyota a call.

Unfortunately, the part number you provided (89620-35140) is for a 2.4L motor with carburetors. Our T4R is fuel injected. Model code is RN60LG-MSEA.

I show the same results searching through Toyota Parts Deal. Both part numbers appear to have been discontinued.

I also have no idea what the "mark" number signifies, but it would be interesting to find out.

Did you look up the part numbers online through an OEM Parts Dealer website or through an actual Toyota dealer parts department?

Even though we (the public) have access to factory parts diagrams and part number look up filters that are pretty darn accurate, nothing beats the parts lookup catalog that the Toyota dealership uses. Have a Toyota Dealership parts department run your VIN and see which part number comes up as fitting your 4Runner.

Toyota is great for giving the same part different numbers for different applications.

You Have owned this from brand new so you know it is the original engine ?

Response to Old87Yota.

You are correct, these igniters are "discontinued" by Toyota nor could we find any new old stock units anywhere. However, I did find aftermarket versions searching the internet. These units, manufactured in the USA believe it or not, were sold under several brand names, including Standard Motor Products (SMP) and Airtex. These are typically sold in retail boxes.

I found the part numbers looking at an online Toyota Parts Catalogue ("TPC"), which includes diagrams and part numbers. I looked up the information using the truck's VIN.

As you suggested, I obtained a bit more information from my local Toyota dealer who used the VIN. The parts guy confirmed for me that his TPC showed the same two igniters as I'd found in my lookup. He was kind enough to check further and told me that he'd found other information too. With respect to Mark 53, there was a reference to an engine number type (i.e., the letter "D" followed by six number, then the number "8", followed by another sequence of 6 or more numbers. With respect to Mark 65, there was a reference to "Van" and nothing else.

My guess is that the "Van" reference is to a T4R van, as opposed to a T4R "wagon." I want to point out that neither he nor I know what a T4R "van" or "wagon" is and my effort to search the web turned up no information on this subject.

Response to wyoming9:

We bought the truck used. The igniter in the truck is neither the original one nor is the Toyota part number a correct fitment for it. Since the truck was working with the "wrong" model igniter, we were wondering if Toyota was using the same igniters, except putting different part numbers on them depending on the application. You stated that Toyota does follow that practice and that could certainly be the case here. Still, we simply do not know enough about the igniters to evaluate if they are calibrated differently depending on the application. (We only know enough about them to have performed the simple tests of the igniter included in the Toyota shop service manual.)

Take a picture of what you have the plugs and connections

Napa Lists a Igniter for the 85 pick up but not the 4Runner I wonder if the wiring Harness is just different enough not to work ??

Search for a used one the Part # you have .

The thing is you never know if things were repined to work.

Your igniter no longer works ?

The igniter is in poor health and has a severed wire. The wire will not accept solder.

Toyota parts deal has always referred to my 87 t4r as a van... Wiki classifies first gens as compact suv’s Body style 3 door wagons... I remember reading somewhere that early first gens (1984-1985) the back seats were optional and that they were shipped from japan without backseats, it was a dealer install/customer option. I also remember reading 4runners were shipped over classified as wagon/vans to avoid some sort of light truck import tax. (Chicken tax it might have been called?) So maybe that is where the van/wagon mumbo jumbo comes from.

As far as the mark# is concerned, usually it just denotes a batch. Toyota parts deal says both mark 53 and 65 fit efi t4r from 8/84- 3/89. I’d find a working used one of those or a new one that references either 89620-36160 89620-35170

Rasalibre: Interesting info about wagon/van designations. From what you wrote, I surmise that the "van" designation applies to the two front seat only (no backseat) version. Still, I remain confused: Why would there be two different part numbers and two different marks if the marks represent batches? That suggests to me that the part numbers themselves could also designate batches that correspond to the marks. Bottom line is that I follow your reasoning that the igniters are interchangeable and I can reduce my decision to availability and price. Thanks for you help!

I bought mine from rockauto. Here's a link to one that should work for your T4R, about $150. Roockauto: ICM 1985 T4R

High Alt Gold Miner: I happen to now have the part you recommended in my possession. Purchased from RockAuto.com You and Rasalibre have both confirmed this fitment. Thanks to you and everyone else in the community who have responded to my original post!

tried to find stock on what i think is this same igniter, for my '86 4runner efi, the only place to get it is at the dealer for around $400 or more... there are a bunch of cross-referenced numbers for it, but i couldn't find stock on any of 'em... so if you see a used one, better grab it! at this point i'm reluctant to go on any long trips without a backup igniter.

I replaces my 1986 OEM 22RE ignitor decades ago with a NAPA unit TP-214 (Ignition Control Module). Haven't had any issues.
