87 4Runner and 88 Corvette engine, questions ahead
Hey you guys, looking for advice from the gurus. I have my 87' that I pulled out of the woods after 13 years with no motor. Now, it's time to change that. I went to the junkyard and pulled a complete L98 from a 88 Vette. I guess I'm looking for info to be the cheapest and easiest swap. I have plenty of skills and tons of tools so by all means rebuilding a trans isn't difficult for me. I have the 22re and 5speed manual trans, I assume it's the w56. I guess on to my specific questions... let's start with trans. I don't intend on mudding or crawling, just having a good all around truck that can handle a load, maybe on 32's. With that being said I have no interest in upgrading the power of the engine. Should I be leary on using the bell housing adapter/clutch combo? I intend on keeping this a manual, and I've read that there is the turbo 350 trans that will make up the exact space of the w56. Isn't that an auto though? I'd like to keep it easy and not have to change driveshaft lengths. Um, fuel... does anyone have experience around here with megasquirt? I have it in my Miata and it plugs into the factory ecu plugs, and guess what, they have a model available for the 4Runner. It'd be an easy way to get it running on all cylinders, through the factory harness, and deleting emissions related items properly. And then I can tune both fuel and spark. Well I guess that's it for now, if you guys are interested I'll throw some pics up. Thanks for the help, fellers.

Welcome to YotaTech!
Maybe I am reading your post incorrectly, but what exactly are you trying to do?
Are you keeping the factory 22R-E or are you swapping in the Corvette engine into the 4Runner?
We always welcome pictures!

Sorry, I guess I can clear things up easily. It had originally a 22re, whoever left it in the woods left it with no motor. I pulled it out of the woods and got tired of dicking around trying to get a good 22re in there. So I went to the junkyard, picked up a 350 L98 Corvette engine. I was thinking it'd be good to flip but have decided that it'd be a good candidate for the Yota. Is it too much for the w56 with generally sensible driving? Should I opt for a chevy trans? Or is the bell housing, chevy flywheel and pp, and adapter clutch disk a reliable combo?
