My local stealer is running a special on timing belt replacement for $219. Is this a good deal? I can do most of the maintenance on my truck by myself but I don't think I trust myself to do this...and at this price, I may just have them do it. What to do.....

 

I don't think that is a bad price at all.

I had my timing belt, water pump, thermostat and all drive belts changed out for $510 (or something close to that) a few months ago.

I would bet that it would be at least $300.00 or better if I brought my car or truck in to have that done.

Is that total price, or are there perhaps some extra costs, like another $50.00 for the belt?

 

Watch these "Special" deals - they get it apart and then get you for the Idler's, Belts, Water Pump etc. etc. etc. -- It's amazing how much stuff you can find to replace once you get in there that far.

 

I did mine for $219 too. And that included the belt. In fact, I told them to do the water pump at their discretion, and what do you know...they told me it was fine. Go figure! They earned points with me on that one.

 

I am getting mine done on Friday-I work for a Ford dealer that also owns a Toyota store so I am getting a really good deal. I am paying $325. for t-belt and water pump-parts and labor. I am also having them replace the t-stat and belts while they have it apart.

 

Just getting geared up to do this myself. Figured I do it all while I was in there. Sadly, I've neglected my cooling system to date. Don't want to find out in 5000mi that my water pump needs replacing. Hopefully the idlers are OK. Guess I'll find out.

Whats the average mileage to start looking at a tbelt replacement, Ive heard 100k in the past.

 

You are supposed to do it at 60k but I don't recommend more than 90k before doing it.
(I know some have a higher recommended in the owners manual as well)

 

That is total price including the belt.

 

If that's the case, I would not be reluctant to pay that.

Well I got my timing belt, water pump and t-stat replaced today at the dealership that my company own--thank goodness for employee discounts. I got the whole thing done for $320.--parts and labor.

 

The 3.4 has a chain right, which motors have the belt? I think the recommendation for the chain is checking it out at 90k.

 

Nope, the 3.4 is a belt and the 2.7 and 2.4 are chains.

 

NO! The 3.4 has a belt also....Toyota recommends the T-belt on the 3.4 at 90K, but I can tell you from experience that ANY T-belt, in MY opinion should be done every 60K. This is for piece of mind....if the belt breaks, you are looking at a LOT of money! Unless of course you are lucky and the valves don't hit the pistons. I do not know for sure if the 3.4 is an interference engine, but I know the 3.0 is NOT. Either way, being stranded with a broken belt SUCKS.
