22r gutless uphill?

Anyone want to take a guess why my 86 4x4 22r pickup looses all it's nut when going up hill? Im talking on paved road, mountain passes in Oregon little background, truck has rebuilt 22r with around 25,000 miles on it. Swapped out factory carb for weber 32/36, desmogged and sensors removed and plugged off. Sits on 33x12.5 mud tires, open diffs, 4.10's. The truck will easily get up to 75 mph on flat ground but it seems the slightest incline takes all power away. 3rd gear gas pedal mashed all the way and only does 35-40 mph. Im wondering if its just my 4.10's or if my distributor is shot? Its old, timing is dead on at idle but wonder if its mechanical advance isn't working right? Anyone ever have this issue? Any ideas?

I will put my next paycheck on the gears being the issue. I run 33's on my rig (2.7) but I have 4.56's. Uphill just needs a little more throttle, but does well given the lift and tires.
Check out the gear ratio and tire combo chart on this site, lots of good info here: http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html

Is the rebuilt motor completely stock style or are there any after market/performance parts? A free flowing exhaust and an aftermarket filter/deckplate/intake will help a bit on the hills. In my experience it did.

I run 33's on my 4Runner with the stock 4:10 gears. I don't have much issue with hills even when I travel through the mountains of West Virginia. Usually downshift to 4th or maybe third for really steep ones but still able to keep it around 55. Granted, my motor is EFI not carbed, but I don't think the gears are causing his problem 100%.

I'll take that next paycheck.

LOL I don't get paid til Thursday morning, you'll have to wait!

Don't forget too you have a four cylinder, they do not produce a whole lot of power as it is. Distributor is an idea though, hows everything else? (Air filter, Plugs, Wires, Belts, etc...)

Yeah other than the weber and desmog its totally stock, every engine component was replaced with rebuild fuel pump, alternator, fuel filter etc. etc. Everything except the distributor. This is my first carb truck. Ive owned R-E's in the past and never had this issue. I know carbs lose a little power with elevation but this seems excessive.

Hmm, if everything is new or rebuilt except the distributor then I'd say take a chance on it and replace it.

Yeah I'll try the distributor, hopefully thats the issue. Gears will be next. If your stuck on 4.88's you should be able to find complete 3rd members in that ratio. May be easier and cheaper if you can find em on craigslist or something. Pretty sure v6 automatics have those gears.

A little over a 100 horsepower and you wonder why it loses power in the hills .

My fresh built 22re in my 4runnerr back a few years ago I avoided the interstate for lack of power

You don`t say Automatic as well?? They are even more of a snail

How much extra weight did your truck gain ??

no my truck is a 5 speed. I was talking to the other guy who was asking about a good manufacturer of ring and pinion gears in 4.88, i told him im pretty sure v6 automatics have those gears. Anyways yeah i know 100hp aint much but like i said ive owned 22RE trucks in the past with the same tire and gear set-up and never had this kind of power loss on hills. My truck does great on the interstate, like i said 75mph no prob on flat ground but as soon as i hit an incline power goes to $h!t.

Sounds good, let us know how it turns out. Thanks for the info on the gears!

This reminds of when Barney was writing speeding tickets to truckers and Andy was trying to explain to him that they had to be going fast enough to make it up the hill that was in front of them. With my automatic, I can be doing 75 to 80 approaching a hill and less than 60 at the top. Reliable, durable, great gas mileage, suspension like a covered wagon and a gutless wonder...I think that about sums it up.

Aren't you able to tell by the sticker on the inside of the door? That's how I figured out mine. It's right next to the transmission code.

If original, the distributor will be fitted with a dual diaphragm vacuum advance can. The inner port (closest to the engine) is the one that usually dies first and with a combination of age and mileage, both diaphragms are probably toast now. These can be checked independently by pulling a vacuum on them and should hold vacuum indefinitely.

Over the past few years, parts suppliers have vastly increased the price of these diaphragms to the point where they exceed the price of an entire distributor, so keep that in mind.

Wow you weren't kidding, I found some vacuum diaphragms for as much as $200! And the distributor I bought that includes a diaphragm was only $75. How that makes any sense I will never know. Its on order so I'll get back once installed and let everyone know if that was the cure.

One issue I have had that will cause my 4runner to run like a dog on hills is low oil in the diff or transmission.
I have experienced both due to slow leaks and my not getting around to checking fluid levels like I should.

The other issue I had after a rebuild was timing and vacuum system set incorrectly buy the guy that did the rebuild, but that made it run like a dog all the time not just hills.

The thing about what gears If you have owned the truck since it rolled off the dealers lot.

You should be able to go by the numbers on the truck .

I have found way to many strange things to take anything on trust
