My alternator won't fit

My alternator won't fit
I have a 88 v6 4Runner that I just bought an oem Toyota alternator and it won't fit, it seems to wide. The old one fit right in no problem, is there something I'm not doing right with my new one?

Did you get the wrong alternator in the correct box??Then if it is the wrong one no way is it going to fit 1/4+ bigger then the brackets
You bought this at your Toyota Dealer or online ??
There are sometime slight differences in castings that some removal of metal will allow things to fit. Not talking much perhaps 1mm or 2mm
Having the alternator twisted will also cause a problem getting it in the brackets
