94 22re runs but dies after a few seconds... Help please!

I recently purchased a 2wd five speed toyota 22re and can't seem to figure out my issue.
Truck starts every time but dies after a few seconds, if I touch the throttle it dies instantly. I've replaced the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, ecu, afm and the tps with no avail.
I'm new to the toyota scene so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't found any leaks and it is throwing codes for 02 sensor, afm and air temp sensor. Has no 02 sensor and already purchased a vafm.

i think that it should run without an o2 sensor, albeit poorly.

since the vafm is replaced, you can clear the codes by pulling a battery cable, or pulling the correct fuse... not sure which fuse it is on the later models.

i think that the 4crawler website lists a way to bypass the fuel pump portion of the cor, i would also try that.

it may not have the right pressure... people have reported differences when the return line to the tank is pinched off, which increases the pressure.

are the same codes still coming up after the reset?

what's the history? you bought it running or not running?

I bought the truck when the previous owner was having problems off and on, he couldn't figure out why it started doing this so I picked it up at a really good price.
I will check the codes and see if they have changed at all then give you an update.

Update on the codes it is throwing.
21- O2
24- air temp
31-AFM
It is also throwing a new code, 41-tps.
Let me know if this helps at all.

getting worse not better, lol

i would google the ground points for these engines, i think that there are at least three straps on the engine? i can remember back of the head to the firewall, and another one on the block, passenger side.

did you set the tps up per the 4crawler faq?

do you have access to a used engine wiring harness, maybe swap it in there to do some troubleshooting?

Fill me in on why there is no O2 sensor on it. The EFI system uses information from the TPS, AFM, CTS and O2 sensor in order create a formula for the fuel injection system.

2 X 4 X 2 X 1 = 16 Change any of those numbers to 0 and the whole equation will = 0.

I'm not sure about the air temperature code. I wasn't aware of one of those in the EFI circuit other than the one that is on the EGR. It that is not reading or not hooked up you should get the code but it should not affect engine performance.

Like OSV said. The EFI circuit grounds could also cause cause fault codes to show up on all of these components at once. Do check those.

Other than that, you could hook up a fuel tester to the fuel rail and make sure your pressures are right. Pinching off the return line will only make the engine run better if the fuel pressure regulator is at fault. Good pressure in the rail should rule out the pump and regulator. A restriction in the fuel lines or a weak pump would allow the engine to idle fine but die when you hit the gas. You would see the pressure drop quickly on the gauge when you hit the pedal.

Like I tell everyone with issues like these. Check/change your air and fuel filters first. They are maintenance items anyway. Don't start drawing conclusions based on CEL codes. Just because you have all these codes doesn't mean that they have anything to do with the way your truck is acting. There is likely a connection but don't let them lead you down a rabbit hole. All engines need air, fuel and spark to run. Verify that you have all of these before you start throwing parts at it based on what codes you have.

Just tested the pump and it has 44psi to the rail. It is getting spark and air.

Just something I have to ask. Did you change the air filter and not get a good connection of the plug on the AFM? Definitely put an O2 sensor back in. It's easy enough if you don't have the port anymore. Just drill a hole about where it's supposed to be. Weld a Bing in there and connect it back in to the system.
Good luck hope this helps

Pulled the ecm today and it was covered in rust due to a hole in the floor pan.
Got a used one for $35 and now the truck runs great.
