1988 3VZE: Conflicting valve clearance specs

Hi all -

I'm performing a valve adjustment on my 1988 Toyota Pickup with the 3VZE V6 engine. I've downloaded the 1993 FSM and it says that the valve clearances for the 3VZE are:

Intake: 0.18-0.28 mm (0.007-0.011 in.)
Exhaust: 0.22-0.32 mm (0.009-0.013 in.)

However, I'm looking at the sticker under the hood of the truck and it states that the valve clearances should be:

Intake: 0.25-0.35 mm (0.010-0.014 in.)
Exhaust: 0.27-0.37 mm (0.011-0.015 in.)

Does anyone know why the specs don't match? Is there something different between the earlier 3VZE engines (1988) and the later ones (1993)? Did Toyota just tighten up the specs in 1993 for the heck of it (doubt it...)?

Any information on this would be a huge help. Thanks!

UPDATE: Just noticed that the under hood emissions sticker says the the truck is a California-spec model. I have to assume this is why the valve clearances are different between the sticker and the Service Manual. Does anyone know if setting the valve clearance to the "tighter" FSM spec would hurt the engine? Is there anything mechanically different on the California-spec 3VZE?

In case anyone runs into this issue in the future, I believe I have found the answer to this valve clearance confusion.

Apparently Toyota did in fact change the clearance specifications after 1988. Nothing about the valve train in the 3VZE actually changed over the years, so the newer "tighter" clearances found in the 1993 FSM are what should be used.

See this thread for more information: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116/3-0l-heads-256277/

Hopefully this is helpful to someone!
