96 T100 Auto Transmission Fluid

Hey all, new-to-me T100 with 150k. Auto transmission fluid change (drain and refill). Manual calls for Dexron II, all I can find around me is Dexron VI. I've read some accounts that it's backwards compatible on MOST transmissions but I'd hate to do the change without checking here first.

Also, went to the dealer and they said not to even bother dropping the pan and changing the filter. Yay or nay yo that advice?

How's that possible? You're how far from a NAPA? Who sells their own brand of Dexron III/Mercon equivalent ATF.

I can't even imagine somewhere that sells ATF that doesn't sell some brand of Dexron III/Mercon equivalent ATF.

Anyhow, I'd use Dexron VI in my Dexron III auto tranny(4T60-E). It says on the bottle it's backwards compatible. So it is. I don't care about someone else's opinion whether it is or isn't. Not only that, it's better for your transmission. The only reason I haven't done so is price. It costs a fortune. So I'll stick with the cheap stuff and change it every 50k.

Good info here: http://www.gmls4.com/index.php?topic=604.0

IMPORTANT: As with previous upgrades, DEXRON-VI fluids are designed to be backward compatible with earlier transmission hardware. But more important, earlier type fluids are NOT FORWARD COMPATIBLE with transmissions that were designed to use DEXRON-VI.
DEXRON-VI can be used in any proportion in past model vehicles equipped with an automatic transmission, in place of DEXRON-III (for instance, topping off the fluid in the event of a repair or fluid change). DEXRON-VI is also compatible with any former version of DEXRON for use in automatic transmissions.
Not bother changing the filter? Asinine. What's their line of reasoning on that load of crap?
