22re motor swap question.

I have an 89 4runner with the 22re and manual transmission all stock. It's over heating pretty sure it's head issues as I've replaced everything else in the system. My buddy has an 87 with 22re and automatic trans. It runs good but has trans issues so I'd like to buy it as a doner truck and swap motors but I wanted to know if I'd have any problem bolting the motor from an auto truck to my manual transmission. What else might I run into or want to look at while I have the motors out? This was my Grandfather's truck he's had it since it was new and I'd rrally like to get it back up and running. I'd also like to slowly build it into a moderate crawler. I'm new to this so any advice would be awesome.

Other then pulling your fly wheel and clutch.

Might be time for a new clutch while it is out

using your engine harness .

Is the donor engine out of a 4x4 as well??

oil pans can be different

Other then some minor issues you should be fine.

Yes donor is a 4x4 as well. Thanks for the help. Sounds like I might have a little work ahead of me but doable

If the wiring harness wont plug into the injectors, the injectors will need to be swapped.
I ran into this problem installing an 88 motor into a 86. Also keep the o2 sensor in the original location. My 86 had it in the exhaust manifold and the 88 was in the exhaust pipe.
It is also a good time to install a new rear main seal while the motor is out .

you want to keep the later model intake plenum and throttle body assembly, because of the superior warm-up circuitry... not sure if they implemented that in '87, my '86 still had the old tilted intake plenum.

i would troubleshoot this... are you losing coolant for example? is there mayonnaise in the overflow bottle, or under the radiator cap? have you run a compression check? etc.

the engine itself should bolt right up.

I haven't done a compression test. I've flushed the radiator, changed the water pump and thermostat and it was still running hot after running about 15 minutes. So it sat for a few months and I was gonna mess with it again and was having trouble cranking it and after a bit I noticed pressure was building up in the radiator from turning over the motor. So I assume that means head issues. Am I wrong with that assumption? I'm pretry handy but definitely not a master mechanic.

so it never started up and ran this time around? i guess that compression pressure could bleed thru into the cooling system, if something was wrong, just never heard of it happening with an engine that wasn't running.

maybe turn it over with the radiator cap off, look for bubbles blowing up through the coolant? if i recall right, usually you can start the motor up cold, and it doesn't disturb the coolant level much until the thermostat opens.
