I have a 91 4runner, 3vze, auto, 78k miles(thats right, probably the lowest mileage 2nd gen 4runner in the states)
3 days ago the starter went out, before hand it was running perfect, has always idled a little high (1500rpm) but was solid.
When I looked to replace the starter the bottom bolt had fallen out and the top bolt was halfway out. I replaced the bolts and ever since its had a rough Idle, only down to 1200 rpm at idle and 600 rpm in gear. and now there is little to no power assist with the brakes.
things I've done
Compression check, 140psi on all cylinders
Fuel Pressure 40psi, no worries there
New plugs and wires checked each, has spark
swapped VAFM with known good one, no change
cat rusted out long ago, no restriction there
been examining vaccuum hoses and dont see any issues,
I figure at this point it is either a vaccuum leak I haven't found (will be smoke testing system shortly) or the tps, but the lack of brakes is making me lean toward vaccuum leak.
sorry for the long story, any advice would be great
Performed a smoke test to find vacuum leak with my improvised smoke machine of a paint can with a air hose connect on one end and a vacuum hose on the other, some burlap on the can smokes a lot when set on fire and piped into the system, found smoke coming from under the passenger side of the intake manifold, removed upper manifold and found the erg tube and cracked halfway up the pipe
