1982 Toyota 4WD SR5 Pickup up for bid at Barrett-Jackson today!
I'm breaking the rules by technically posting a truck for sale in the Tech Section (Don't follow my poor example), but this is an excellent truck that has the potential to find its new owner at very good price! It's a fully restored 1982 Toyota 4WD SR5 Long Bed Pickup. It should be going across the block during today's live show at 3:00pm PST/4:00pm MST/5:00pm CST/6:00pm EST. I have a friend out in Scottsdale right now that buys and sells cars at the Barrett-Jackson auction every year so I had him scope it out for me. He said that the restoration was very meticulously completed using OEM Toyota parts, all of the original parts are in excellent condition and the engine runs strong. He said it is definitely worth looking at where the bid goes. I wanted to get more details on the restoration so I contacted the shop that did the restoration to request some restoration pictures and they should be sending something to me shortly.
Given the fact that this truck is completely out of its market and under appreciated at an auction of this magnitude and volume, I imagine that the winning bidder could get a hell of a price on this truck and that is exactly why I am having my friend bid on it for me. If the truck is truly what it appears to be then I could see a price tag of around $13,000-$16,000 being a rather reasonable deal and likely within the range it will go for. How much I bid is solely dependent on the information and pictures that I receive from the builder. Buuuuut, I already have a first gen pickup and I don't REALLY need another one so I figured that I would share this with you all in the event that some of you may be interested. Good luck if you decide to bid, but I will be bidding too if it goes low enough so don't run the bid up too high on me...
That is really nice! I'd love to pick up a fully restored stocker for a DD. I loved DD'ing mine the two years that I did.. I miss the nostalgia of driving it around and especially the trips hiking and camping in it.
I'm gonna have to either get mine back to where it can handle that, or find another.

That looks like Matt Tildens truck he restored a few years back. The quality of work out of his shop is nothing less than world class. He and his son specialize in FJ40s and they usually do one complete body off resto each year. If you buy this truck, it is investment quality.
Check out his restoration of this '76 Landcrusier he did last year.
I think it'll be a while but these first gen trucks are going to skyrocket in value much like the fj40s have. Maybe not in the 60K range like some fj40s but definitely up there. Could be a very sound investment
It didn't go across the block live on TV, but hopefully it will get played back later on tonight. It sold for $24,200 plus 10% buyers premium so the final purchase price was $26,620. We bid up to $14,500, but apparently there was an internet bidder and an another guy at the auction going at it hard. But the good news is that the market is starting recognize these old trucks a little more. And even more good news, my wife won't kill me for buying another toy (and by toy, I mean literally a TOY; not a Toyota LOL) and I won't have to put off buying my new Tacoma.

$26,000 makes me wanna snatch up all the first gen trucks and parts I can find so I'll have a stock pile to sell once these things get up there in value with the FJ40s..
Gas Monkey Garage had a great unmolested 81 for sale last week. Maybe these trucks are starting to get the attention in the mainstream they deserve
You couldn't pay me to take a car from Gas Monkey. They are a bunch of crooks and their quality of work is absolutely terrible. I've seen some of their builds in person and they are absolutely horrible.
This is an excellent specimen; however, I hope this dealership knows what they bought. For $29,900 he better be willing to hold on to it for a while until the right buyer comes along. These trucks have such a niche market and the people that represent that market don't exactly have $30K to drop on a 34 year old truck. I think most of you guys here (who would represent that niche market) can attest to the fact that we aren't exactly that wealthy. LOL
For those interested. There is a lot of backstory to this truck. Its traveled to Japan and back in 2011, in its current restored condition. This truck shall be the start of a next wave of toyotas. Same article stated the FJ40 had peaked in its first auctions this year. Look forward to the hilux restores in 2016 and beyond. Here is the quote about the truck ..

Nice truck, the value of these was recently going up but has now leveled and somewhat declined, likely do to the high prices FJ's have been commanding. A more affordable alternative. "A" condition trucks have been in the 40-60K range, "B" in the 20-35K range and "C" in the 10K range.
