Can you replace the cam without seperating the head from engie block? I know you need to remove head bolts but after installing a new cam can i just put the bolts back in and re torque them?

 

I forgot to mention its a 22re

 

Some claim success with not removing the head.

It's not something I would do to my own machine.

The safe thing to do is to remove the head, clean the head and block deck, and install a new head gasket.

It would be a good time to replace timing chain and guides if needed also.

 

Best bet would be to remove the head, but I did ratchet strap the head down one time to swap camshafts and it has held up.

I know my luck it would leak as I poured coolant back in it would just pour out.

Its a gamble, lots have done it. But........you may have to tear it apart if the HG starts leaking. I would watch my temperature gauge and check fluids very often afterwards.
