The goal is to end up with the 4.88 geared differential from my 1995 donor vehicle. I'm ramping up to do the work, so I ran into some inconsistencies between the rear end from my 1991 and the 1995. It seems that I have some electronic components not matching between the two years, perhaps sensor input differences??? Also parking break line seems to be different.

However, the site doesn't answer my question. Anyone have experience or comments about this swap? What I don't want to do is swap the gears only, I don't want to touch the gears and have to reset the clearances and all that if at all possible.

This still being my daily driver, when i start the work I need to end it that same day. lol

the sensor on the 95 on top is for abs brakes. you can swap the third member and unplug the sensor if you dont care about abs. other wise you will have to swap the guts from one third to another and have to re shim lash and eat the cost of an install kit. if it were me i would ditch the abs

 

I think all the '95s with ABS have the all electric 4 wheel type with rear tone rings on the axles.

I'll bet that its the earlier axle that has the sensor on the 3rd menber.

This sensor is used with the rear wheel only ABS that uses hydraulic pressure supplied from the trucks power steering pump.

If so, the early 3rd member can be switched over to the '95 and the useless sensor left disconnected.

Edit: maybe I read this wrong.

OP wants to use the '95 3'rd into the earlier truck.

If the '91 has 2 wheel ABS and it is desired that the ABS continue to function, a 3rd that has the sensor in it must be installed.

I am pretty sure I don't ever feel the effect of the abs in my car. Day to day or offroad... So, assuming I take the no abs option, what other issues may I run into? It seems all the spline counts and relevant dimensions are the same...?

 

Other than the lack of the sensor, the thirds should interchange with no problems.

 

Your anti-lock warning light will stay on permanently. (or at least until it burns out). If you can live with that, the lack of rear 2-wheel abs isn't a big deal.
