Are there metal stub pipes for the heater hoses on a 3.4 (pic) ?

One of my coworkers pulled in the parking lot with steam coming out his hood, and the CEL on. He said it happened just as he was close to work.

WE looked, and while there was coolant all over the water control valve and heater hoses on the back side of the motor this morning ,it was all gone by an hour or so later.

We attempted to refill the radiator and see where it was leaking from, but never could fill it up enough as once you hit a certain point it would spill out the back of the engine - not sure from where - and you could see it running down the passenger side block (rear) in front of the exhaust.

This a '99 4 Runner 2WD, and I found a pic on the web that shows where the heater hoses go & looks like maybe there are metal stub pipes.

If so, anyone ever had one rot out ?

Just scratching my head as I did not see any obviously blown hoses.

pic here :

Thanks !

Survey says : Intake Manifold

At least, that is what my co-workers mechanics replaced.

The lower portion, between the heads - you can tell it's new & shiny versus the rest of the motor.

They used Toyota red coolant as well.

I would have liked to have seen what the old one looked like, but oh, well.

in case you were wondering !
