Questions on tinted tail lights

I'm planning on tinting my tail lights myself on my 97 4runner. I believe the tint im going to use is 20% black. I just wanted to know if there's any advice or anything I should look out for, Like laws and such. I've seen some pretty black tail lights on some of the rigs on here.

In Pa it is illegal No clue about Florida.

If you go out of state good to know those laws as well.

I'd bet it's illegal to tint your tail lights in every state because of safety regulations.

I want my tail lights as bright as possible .

If your tail lights are other then stock unless brighter so easy in this day and age for the person that hits you to claim .

You were not visible so now your Truck is rear ended and your buying his repair as well.

What did the FLA DMV say when You asked them?
I tried and found this

316.234 Signal lamps and signal devices.—(1) Any vehicle may be equipped and, when required under this chapter, shall be equipped with a stop lamp or lamps on the rear of the vehicle which shall display a red or amber light, visible from a distance of not less than 300 feet to the rear in normal sunlight, and which shall be actuated upon application of the service (foot) brake, and which may but need not be incorporated with one or more other rear lamps. An object, material, or covering that alters the stop lamp’s visibility from 300 feet to the rear in normal sunlight may not be placed, displayed, installed, affixed, or applied over a stop lamp.

I'm pretty sure that it would be visible for over 300 feet. And I'm only doing a light tint (20%) so it will still be pretty red in daylight.

Any light mods that could even be suggested to diminish the lights strength from stock, will place a giant legal burden on you.

If you have no family, if you have no children, if you never expect to have more than minimum income, or assets, I say go for it!!

I just painted my lenses flat black and scratched a random pattern into them.

Looks like Black Widow spiderwebs. Bright lights make my head hurt.

Awesome

I might do that to my rear view mirrors, that way I'll be reminded of my elbow tattoo's when I look at them.

I mean people got those tail light guards. I might just end up getting those instead of tinting. We'll see..

Mine is a 92 I used black Plasti dip and when i first saw them i figured they would be too dark. Lights shine through just fine. I asked a cop and he said the lights need to be visible from 1000ft (Texas)

Looks dim to me too - and dangerous. I love my truck and I'm sure you do too, especiall if you want to care enough to change the lights and personalize your rig - but why risk being rear-ended, damage your ride, and ruin someone else's life just because you thought it would be cool to tint (compromise) your number one signaling device on your vehicle?

Ive had tinted tail lights for over a year. Also have a tinted cover over my license plate. I can see my tail lights just fine. I love the look also, I've never been pulled over for that, and when I have been pulled over the officer said nothing about it. If you crash though, a good lawyer can use it against you.
