so i have a 1987 22re that needs a knock sensor and guess what it has been discontinued along with the thermo switch,now i,ve looked every where for one and can,t get it.called rancho toyota parts and they wouldn,t even sell me one ,said they put them on their rebuilts.my engine only has 2500 miles on it and i,d sure hate like hell to scrap it out because of a sensor, and it seems no one on here knows any thing or their not saying any thing if they do. i guess it,s another got to be in the click here also

By the way, how do you know the sensor is bad? From what I've heard, they're VERY tough, and knock sensor issues are commonly wiring based.

The OP sure gave up real easy .

Most knock sensor issues are wiring issues unless it comes loose and gets drug down the road till there is nothing left but the wires.

I can only speak about this first hand what can I say!!

 

sorry about punctuation last thing on my mind, because i was so pi$$ed off cause i,ve been trying to get information about this for 3wks to a month now .Even posted newbie area at that time and no response. the reason i know it,s bad is because it,s broke. As for the # i don,t know because every time i check application it says it won,t work. Mines july of 87 for build date and r for vin#. The problem is i can find all kinds for 8 of 87 but i guess they won,t work on mine and on back and no one knows what i can interchange with it.

 

I have worked on several 22re's and if there is one correct part numbered Knock Sensor on any of them, it was by accident. As far as I know they were all the same. It does sound like you gave up easy. I must of missed the newbie post and try and check it when I can but some do slip by. Boneyard, classifieds on here, ebay, parts stores... will have them.

 

how did i give up easy? i searched high and low on here and couldn,t find the answers i needed. i called every wrecking yard here and in wash. and parts stores some even called the dealers for me and every time was the same answer discontinued. i,ve checked on ebay amazon rockauto geeks parts discontinued parts, i,ve checked with friends non friends fellow employees the mechanic at our shop who also thought he could get it but couldn,t so yeah i guess your right i haven,t tried hard enough i even checked on here and pirates oh and as i said at beginning of thread rancho toyota parts out of cali. who refused to sell me one, so if the other newer ones will work on my truck then let me know or tell me to basicly go screw myself cause that seems to be all i hear from every one i,ve mentioned in this paragragh

But you say you've done the research, so you might be able to tell us why Amazon is incorrect.

 

I am sure you could get one here https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f37/...i-have-261363/ I have never had one to fail myself. The wire is the biggest problem in my experience. It gets brittle due from the heat and wind generated by the fan and just doesn't hold up to the abuse.

Also on the Water Thermo Switch, the green one, they get a hard water build up on them and usually a brass wire brush will clean them up and get them to working. I have never had one of those to fail on me or several other trucks I have worked on.

The Brown one which is the Cold Start Injector Time Switch will fail. A resistance check after putting it in the freezer and at room temperature will let you know if it is good real quick. Those are getting hard to find and I have never tried an aftermarket CSI Timing Switch. I grab those every time I find one in the yards.

Seems like the Cold Start Injector gets the blame for failing when it is actually the CSI Timing Switch every time I have come across an issue like this and in my own experience.

Some parts are starting to get hard to find and 5 years from now is only going to get worse so I have stocked up on a few as I come across them.

Like Terry said most times it is the pig tails that get brittle not the sensor.

if you check the last page terrys87 i had said some thing about one and never got a return answer back, and according to every thing i have checked into says from build date of 7-87 on back has been discontinued other then turbo and it also just shows the trucks no forerunners no celicas no nothing, this is what all toyota parts and dealers are telling me and when i punch in my info every thing comes up not found, and that,s why i want to know if i put a sensor from build date of 8-87 will it work the connection is the same and again yes mine is broke. i have checked all those sensors so far and supposedly none are capatible with mine. just what i,ve been told by parts dealers

 

As difficult as broncotoyo's posts are to read, he might be right about the part.
http://www.toyotapartsoverstock.com/...nock%20control is a knock sensor for 1984-88, but it appears to say that it is limited to turbos (it's much easier to make this determination WITH the VIN, as the fitment section lists whole years, rather than by the month-year build date.)

A knock sensor is a bone-simple device, so as long as it could be screwed into the block and somehow match the electrical connector, I'd bet it would work. Unfortunately, it's an expensive part no matter where it comes from, so it's not going to be easy to order parts just to try them for fit.

 

That,s what i was thinking also scope103 cause i seen some on ebay for as low as ten dollars,they were after market but looked identical to the one I took out of mine. I noticed on the bottom of some that looked like mine they were indented where as mine is flat so I think maybe that might be the difference. From what i,ve seen on mine it,s just a microphone. there,s a screw,spring,white thick plastic washer and some other circular object under the plug. I,ll have to cut the metal top off my old one and check it out. I,ll have to pm wyoming9 about the one he has.
