Hey guys,
I was driving my 94 toyota pickup on the highway and noticed my truck surging and losing power. I pulled off and found fuel leaking out of what I assume is a vent hose that comes out the bottom of the charcoal canister. Can anyone tell me what is the cause of it? I thought maybe a bad fuel pressure regulator but when I take the vacuum hose off the FPR, there is no fuel in it.

Did you overfill your fuel tank?

 

Not that I know of. No fuel ever flowed out of the filler neck when I put gas in it and I stopped when the pump shut off.

 

If the vacuum line from the canister to the Thermal Vacuum Valve to the throttle body is disconnected, you won't have flow to remove the fumes condensed in the canister. Eventually enough fuel accumulates that it has to go somewhere, which is out the bottom (which is actually the air intake when you have vacuum).

Assuming you have the 3VZE, the TVV is a weak point. It is in a hellish environment, the plastic deteriorates, and one or both of the nipples can break off. Some on this site have repaired them, but they are only about $52 at the dealer.

I have the 22RE, could it still be the same problem? Also, you're saying the there shouldn't be an open ended rubber hose coming out the bottom of the canister? It should be attached to the throttle body?

 

It's probably a clogged filter or stuck check valve, both inside the canister and not serviceable. Replace it with a new one.

 

There should be 2 hoses on top, one goes to the intake, the other to the fuel tank. The one on the bottom is a vent.

I'm going to look at a 1994 22re with the same issue Thursday. Don't want to make an offer if it's a major issue.
