I got a 93 xtra cab 3.0 5 speed. After I replaced a burned number 5 exhaust valve that I got it with I had my passenger side head gasket go after 4k miles. Since I parked it I got an 02 grand prix 3.1 and an 01 Buick regal 3.8 with the blower. What motor would be cheaper to swap in. I planned on rebuilding whatever one I put in. I have seen conversion kits for sbc and other motors but nothing for these ones. Can I convert to carb so I can eliminate most the wiring. I just want my truck back but would like to gather most the info before starting this project. I don't want to have this in my garage for long because I have many other projects to do also.

 

Just because you have engines laying around doesn't make them good candidates for engine swaps.
What's your skill level? Ever swapped motors before? What trans do you plan on running?

 

Well I figured these motors would be good candidates since they are reliable motors and good power. I'm a very skilled mechanic but an hoping to run as many Toyota parts as possible

 

I'm a huge fan of 7mgte, 1jzgte or 2jzgte engines. I am doing a 7mgte swap on my truck right now.

Bonus of the 7mgte is it is easy to get a donor car and parts. Also easy to work on. The 1jzgte and 2jzgte are much more rare in NA.

If you get a donor car it's doable but not easy by any means. Most ppl swap these motors in with the W58 transmission (22re engine models). With your's and mine being a V6 you have a couple options. Convert internals of R154 into R150f transmission, or get a Post 1996 R150 and conversion plate for the transfer case and R154 bellhousing. OR, bolt on an R151 which is rare from the turbo 22re trucks (1986-87 i think).

You also have to rework the oil pan and new mounts and possibly new drive shafts depending on location.

But, You get a super sweet inline six engine with turbo. Really Really compliments the truck.

 

I think the 3.8 swap use to be pretty popular, but I don't know anything about those motors. That might not even be the same style 3.8 anymore.

Im doing a vortec 4.3 swap, so that's what I would recommend lol. They are cheap, easy to find and easy to get parts for. After all, its basically a 350 with two cylinders cut off.

 

The 3.8 N/A or S/C is an awesome swap but its not easy do to the fact not much info and people doing it. I just got mine running but still working out the bugs. If your worried about time down do a 3.4 yota or the 4.3 chevy, so much info on them. Sell what you have to get the funding you need.

 

I have considered selling my stuff to buy a 3.4 a few times. Not many Toyotas around where I live. I really don't want to rebuild the 3.0 again. It's depressing to drive. it's so slow and the gas mileage is worse than a 3/4 ton Chevy. If I were to get a 3.4 how much would it cost for me to be making some power.

 

Go test drive a 3.4 taco that's similar to your truck to see the power difference in power. If your really looking for power, skip the 3.4, go big. I can't wait to get the funds to start my swap.

 

I have a 99 Tacoma with a charger @8psi ,4.10 and 31"s. Im guessing @ 250hp. its enough power to piss off people when getting on the HWY.

I average @ 16-17 MPG.

 

I love my swapped 3.4. Then I sc'd it. Hoollee chit. If I could sleep with it I would.

 

What bigger engine swaps go relatively nice with a 22RE not the 3RZ something bigger
