91 4x4 5 speed 22re. Instead of rebuilding my tranny (has some bad bearings) I'm thinking of just swapping since I can get a whole truck without a motor for $250. I have heard there are 2 different transmissions for these year models, how can you tell and what's the difference? Thanks in advance!

 

As long as its original, the door tag will tell you what kind it is.

This may be confusing, because this is pic is for something else, but its the number RIGHT BELOW the red circle, for example, this truck has a w56 in it.

Not sure on the 89-95, but the earlier models have a VIN Tag on the firewall just above the motor and the last digits will tell you which tranny you have also if Toyota still puts it on the newer models.

 

Thanks for the replies! Mine has the W56 in the door tag. Anyone know what other manuals were offered and what the difference is?

 

I don't know of another manual transmission offered but there was an automatic as well.
