Howdy folks,

I'm buying a performance head with an after market cam locally that was in a burnt truck. The guy I'm buying it from bought the whole motor at auction and therefore isn't sure the exact cam that's in it but he says it was listed as being freshly rebuilt, bored over with head work done along with the cam. He's selling the block guaranteed to be good but told me he wasn't sure if the head was alright so I'm getting the whole head with cam for cheap.

First off would the head be damaged by the fire? Even if the head was damaged would the cam have been damaged?

I'm only counting on getting a cam out of this deal so I'm not super worried if the heads damaged. But provided it's alright how would I be able to identify the cam? Do most after market cams have engravings of would it be down to measuring and matching lobes?

Any advice is appreciated!

Lots of people have done cams but I'd say 99% of them are cams that are ordered new so its already known what it is before install. I'd call LCE and engbldr and ask them. Its been a few years since my cam was installed but I dont remember any markings on it.

 

Did you see the truck the engine was pulled from??

There are fires Then their are Fires!!

Depending just how hot things got the whole engine could be toast if it was hot and hit with cold water .

Think major over heating but lots worse.

If it was driven home after the fire you should be ok.

The only way to tell the cam is to measure it. compare it with the specs of what it is supposed to be.

Building any kind of power in these engines is so very expensive.

 

I'm going to see him tomorrow or the next day and Ill ask him. He said the block was fine so I assume it wasn't that serious. I'm just looking to get the cam out of it so even if the heads a little rough its not big deal.

I don't want to make huge power just for the price I might as well throw a cam in my truck if I can.

 

there should be a part number on it somewhere, usually on the firewall side of the shake stick.
