Toyota Fun Runner by leisure odyssey

Hello I am looking for info about these. There is a guy in my area selling one I am looking to go pick up. Anybody know what makes them different then a 4runner? Looks like one, has 4wd, removable hard top. This one has no backseats but all the info I have found about them(almost none) says they have a back seat.
Maybe this is just a truck that leisure odyssey produced for them self to sell? They are the ones who did the 4runners for toyota right?
Anyhow if anybody has any info that would be great all I have found was a couple forum posts on other sites with only one having pictures of a white 2wd version. Looked like a pre-runner.

I thought that the Funrunners were a US modded truck that was built under Toyota supervision to prove that there was a market before Japan 4Runner production was started. Not so??? Circa 1984??

That's a cool looking truck, definitely some subtle differences from a 4runner. Looks like a truck tailgate without that stupid roll down window (sweet!) and the B pillar is different too. Curious what the interior looks like.

Looks to be a pickup with a 4Runner top on the bed.

well i went and looked at it. I will be taking delivery of it tomarrow. I will show lots of pics. the camper is differnt in some minor ways like it is taller. the roll bar is totally differnt, and the area where the seats go is also differntly done. it has no back seats or carpet. I will probably be looking to put a seat back there. Nice truck really. I didnt think too get any pics while i was there, sorry.

Yes. Look at the black plastic behind the door. That is the pick up style. The 4runners have them about 4" wide with a plastic emblem that says "Toyota 4Runner." Anyway that black vent cover is wrong. It looks like a decent truck though. I'd just be wary if the seller is trying to mislead you.

Another clue is on the open passenger door. All 1st gen 4Runners had a second door handle for the back seat passenger to get out.

I think some one is trying to throw a old 4runner top on a pickup and tell you it's a "funrunner" more like "Frankenrunner" for one you can even see the camper top back glass don't even match up right. Or its one of those aftermarket 4runner lookalike tops. The side glass don't look right. Here is a pic of my 86 4runner for comparison. Name: 20141203_173533_zpshloomcjw.jpg

Yeah he wasn't trying to say it was, a 4runner. In fact he was specific about it not being a 4runner. It was the very first thing he said and what he focused on while I was looking at it. Must have told me it wasn't a 4runner like 50 times. (Probably had tons of people asking him that. lol) The mods where done by leisure odyssey, they also produced a bunch of the toyota campers. I have found info about them and the logo's are gone but you can see the ghost marks where they where. I was just hoping that someone would have some brochures from leisure odyssey or something but doesn't look like it. I found a toyota camper specific forum, once I get the truck I will start a thread over there and maybe they will have more specific info about leisure odyssey, the company.
Anyhow nice truck, Nice clean motor, and trans, shifts and runs great. got a 22r, all stock. The guy said he doesn't know how to work on vehicles so everything was done at shops and it shows under the hood. All nice and clean and everything where it belongs. The motor and trans where replaced a while back. Not used to getting a turn key toyota. I don't think it needs anything but maybe better speakers. lol

so is it simply a "walkthrough" truck? from the pic it looks like they connected the bed and cab like they do on a trekker. probably doesn't have rear seating because they'd likely have to mess with the floor to get one to sit low enough to not hit your head. either way, seems like you're going to be happy with the purchase.

You can see they made a foot well for the rear seats. Looks similar shape too a 4runner but done different. I hope I can find and setup a seat for the back. I still have the one I got for my trailblazer I won't be using in the trailblazer because nobody over like 4 1/2 feet tall could sit back there.
My trailblazer is just a normal truck bed with the front cut off and married with a RV cab.
Like you can actually see the cuts and welds on the trailblazer. I think that is why they added that piece between the cab and bed.
This one (funrunner) has a normal looking bed up too the cab side of the wheel wells, then it is cut out with another piece screwed/glued in place, and the mounting for the seat belts and seats themselves, it drops down a bit maybe 12" or so.

fronts fairly normal. ford escort seats.

the roll bar is a full boxed unit.

this is the area for the seats.

At toyota diy my vin comes up as a 4runner. At toyotas website it says truck. Im not sure but i think that is just them being generic. because it would be a pickup. i wonder if a 4runner comes up as a truck as well. anyhow those are the best pics i can get in the total blackness of my backyard.
