I have a 91 Toyota pickup 22re 3 weeks ago I was driving down the road truck cut off I pulled over and tried to crank it and found out the timing chain had broke put a new timing chain on it and set the timing now everything in the motor is turning like its supposed to but the truck will not start its getting fuel and fire but will not start I have had several people tell me the timing is either still off or its the valves can anyone help me with this problem???

 

Do a compression check or a leakdown check. Either test will clue you in if something is way off, like bent valves.

 

OK I won't be able to work on it again til Wednesday but the mechanic that put the timing chain on it said that the motor had good compression have had 2 mechanics look it over and both of them said it had to be timing or valves I have tried everything else possible without taking motor apart a

 

Also how could I do a leakdown or compression check if the truck won't start??

 

You don't want the engine to actually start. Pull the fuel pump, EFI fuse, or spark plug cables, etc. so just the starter cranks it over.

 

The engine doesn't run during these tests.
Sounds like the problem points to the timing, may have to tear it back open to check it.

 

If you're 100% sure someone did either of those tests after you replaced the timing chain and found no problem then I have to agree with the above.

 

I'm gonna try these test again myself just to be 100 percent sure that its not in the compression. One of the mechanic told me to check the timing that you can switch the plug wires around the distributor cap to find out but I'm not sure if that would mess anything up or not

 

Wait. So a mechanic replaced your broken timing chain, and gave you your truck back without it running???

Sounds like your mechanic needs to finish the job.

 

He put the timing chain in it one day but had a bunch of other vehicles said could possibly be after Christmas before he could look any further into I got it home trying to get it running cause I don't have another vehicle

 

I get it. But seriously, finish the job before starting others. Ugh. I would lean toward timing. I wouldn't be surprised if the mechanic is a couple two three teeth off. He might have rushed this relatively quick fix with how busy he is.

 

Yea that's what I said I will never use this mechanic again. I am gonna check the timing Wednesday that's my next day off I think its the timing to

 

I'm not sure what else can be damaged when it breaks while driving. Mine broke when I was getting ready to pull out of my driveway. I don't have a whole lot of help to offer either, I lived in farm country on a gravel road during harvest and I was not about to open my engine up with that much dirt in the air. My idiot dad got it done in a day with no manuals and not a friggin clue.

 

This guy put a timing chain in the same motor 2 years ago and then this one broke and it broke the timing chain tensioner I don't know what else it could be other than out of timing or no compression

 

Well maybe not all the valves have the compression they need

 

Theres another red flag. Lose that mechanics number.

 

Already lost that number and just gonna fix it myself that way ain't got a mechanic bullying me for more money

Found out when my timing chain broke it bent all 4 valves so got to get the head redone and rebuild the motor
