Speedo out 1991 toyota pickup

Let's pretend I know nothing about working on my truck other than basic maintenance... My speedo went out about a week ago , sub zero temps (may or may not be related) I've had a fuse issue or two (lights went out in the heat /cooling dash) about a year ago. Not a big deal... Never looked into fixing. Same morning my speedo went out, my phone charger that was plugged into cigarette lighter was out then turned on. If the cable is bad, what the heck am I looking at under my truck? Seriously dr google and YouTube have yet to guide me in the right direction. I'm sure as heck not paying someone to replace what I can do myself. Any help would be appreciated!

Some "later" trucks have the electronic speedometer (VSS1); I don't know which models or years. Easy to tell; at the back of the transfer case there is either a small device with a 3-conductor plug, or a rotating cable.

If you have the electronic VSS1, they only last about 20 years. Generally, they fail slowly, with the speedometer dropping to zero and then back up. Cold could accelerate it.

Is your cruise out as well?
