In desperate need of help troubleshooting 91 22re misfire...

So... truck has been running pretty good as of late, and i thought I had most of the minor things fixed from buying a used truck...

Was idling at a stop light 2 days ago (first day of super cold weather here, 10f) and the truck started running rough. I had to drive about 15 miles up the mountain for a job interview, so I did that. Made it up and back home ok, but the truck was shaking and just didnt feel right.

Parked it when i got home and could tell it was misfiring. I proceded to pull the spark plug wires while it was running and noticed #2 cyclnder was indeed not firing.

Got new plugs and wires, installed them, with no improvement. I also verified that I had good spark on all the new plugs (everything is sparking fine). Notice I can hear somethin in the valves that doesnt sound quite right.

Also notice that when I was testing things I could smell much more fuel from the exhaust then normal.

I am recently out of work and pretty much broke, so I am trying to avoid going to a local mechanic if at all possible.

My question is what other sort of things should I be troubleshooting givin the symptoms I am having. I have no garage so I don't want to risk opening the valve cover (its very windy here i dont want debris to blow into it).

I am worried it is a valve issue such as a bent rod or ??? but I have no idea what else to do. Trying my best to learn to work on my own rig, but my automotive experience is lacking.

Thanks for any ideas.

Hey, D. I think the exhaust valve is stuck open from what you're describing. With the valve open, there's no compression and consequently no detonation in that cylinder. I've got a compression tester if you want to check. It's probably just a stuck lifter you can free up with some sea foam via the intake. Drive it easy and try keep your rpm low until it frees up.

place a stethoscope at #2 injector to hear if the injector is functioning. It should tic or click when operating.

thats for the awesome idea. i will try to do that tomorrow if i can find a stethoscope to use. I am enjoying learning all these tips and tricks from those who are helping me. It is always great to learn and using a stethscope to pinpoint sound seems like such a great way to go about checking for one function of the injector.

To see if number 2 is firing, https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...t-22re-270857/ if it isnt firing, I would suspect the injector or the crimp to the injector. It is a poor design in the wiring harness.

The crimp is located in the dip of the wiring from the inner fender to the intake manifold area.

You can also use a long blade flat screw driver by placing the blade on the metal body of the injector and putting your ear on the handle end and you can hear the tic/click.
