I got some coolant on my belts, and now one of them starts squealing like crazy after a few minutes of idling.

What is the best way to clean them off? I'd be stoked if I could clean them without removing them.

Water? Do they have the correct tension on them? Good time to replace them now

 

Like JasonYota says, shoot 'em with water and retighten them. do they look frail and cracking? Then replace them.

 

Shootin' 'em with water seems to have done the trick.

Turned out to just be the Power Steering Belt making noise.

It was weird: at first spraying it with water would only make it go away for 30 seconds to a minute.

Got fed up and closed the hood after spraying it several times and the noise coming back (although quieter) and after a minute the squealing went away and stayed away -- for now, fingers crossed!

fwiw, belt dressing actually works quite well on belts. if you get dried on coolant it takes a bit more effort to remove than just a spray of water.

 

Yeah they're still making a bit of noise when the engine's warming up, but it's pretty quiet and goes away after driving for a bit.

I'm averse to the idea of belt dressing 'cause I don't like the idea of something sticky collecting and holding onto dirt and grime over time.

I've read that soap's not good for belts, but would that work? Spraying it with some soapy water?

Anyone solved with this problem before??

 

Buy a new belt. You can get them for literally a couple bucks online.
