2001 Toyota Tacoma v-6 3.4 180 Degree Camshaft Marks

Hi All:

2001 Toyota Tacoma v-6 3.4l 4wd

I'm in the process of changing my timing belt on a Tacoma owned previously by a family member. A garage did the timing belt about 60k miles ago.

Before I take the next step of removing the crank shaft pulley etc...., I noticed the camshaft markers are 180 degrees off, or pointing down (south). The truck runs okay, just not a ton of power. Now, I'm wondering if this is the reason.

I have the crankshaft at TDC or "0" in the image. My question:

  1. Any thoughts on how this vehicle was able to operate?
  2. Should I rotate the camshafts to their correct position? If yes, do I need to worry about damaging the valves as I rotate the cam?

Thanks for your help!

Rotate the crank one more full rotation, then the cam marks should be lined up.

EDIT: your pictures aren't working.

It's a non-interference cam train.....so you should be able to rotate it to your hearts content.

Thanks for the quick response. I figured out the problem, the crankshaft actually has two marks. The garage installed the belt without paying attention to the actual markings on the belt. I've uploaded the the photos to a different site:
