86 toyota 4x4 sr5 turbo truck bad turbo

I have a 86 toyota turbo pickup that I bought recently that the turbo exhaust housing is cracked in. I found a new housing for it but I was wondering if I could upgrade the turbo so it is better than stock. I was thinking the ct26 turbo or a t3. But I do not know what is required to do this swap. I can pickup a turbo kit on ebay for 500 bucks but that is pretty much my spending cap. Any help and ideas would be great.

If youre looking for an upgrade to the old CT20 you will most likely spend a bit of cash. The best for your buck is probably going for the CT26 because most of what you need is tools and some know-how. With the T3 youll need a whole stack of adapters different hoses etc etc. With the CT26 there are quite a few build threads for it. Trust me I run a GT28RS and my turbo not including the kit to adapt it was 1300. You can get a cheaper kit but what quality turbo will you get? If you get a CT26 you can find plenty second hand at a junk yard and just rebuild them or online for fairly cheap. Im not aware of any adapter kits for the CT26 though.

Wink Doing the same thing!

i own a 87 4runner turbo with the same crack on the exhaust side of the turbo. I was looking up ct26 swaps on 22re. Check that link out.

Planning on getting this done soon. After i replace my fuel pump that went out on me. Its not too hard too get it going on a ct26.
