my 22re is going bananas. Overheating, throwing codes, not idling.

Hello everyone, I have a 1986 4runner 22re 5speed. My problem is, I overheated the truck without knowing, the temp gauge never moved. I was in the mountains so had no cell service or help so had no choice but to get out of the canyon and as close to town as possible. it was only 24 miles till the engine quit . thought I just blew the head gasket. It puked coolant and It was smoking/steaming by cylinder 4 on the exhaust side. There was coolant in the oil but maybe only a few table spoons. Not enough to make it "milkshake" barely enough to make it look marbled. Changed the head gasket and the engine now is hard to start, wont idle and still overheatsNow that the truck is back together it just cranks unless the gas is pumped, it'll start, but it wont idle on its own and shakes unbelievably under 1500 rpm. It also still over heats and smokes from by cylinder 4. It's also throwing codes 2 and 8 when not running and 8 and 11 when running. I've been searching for an answer everywhere and have read countless threads. head isnt warped and old gasket showed no signs of damage. Did I crack the block from heat?? or?? What does this sound like to you guys? Any help is appreciated. I can take photos, videos or answer any questions. Thanks guys

If you have smoke of some sort coming from an area in the engine bay like you describe something is WAY wrong. Did you have the head checked/machined?

You may have more than one fault:

Check AFM, all electrical connections, grounds and fuses.
Check timing.
Air in the cooling system will make truck run rough!

Have a read of this thread. Fingers crossed it is something simple.

22re same.

Thanks for the answers guys! Well some problems are fixed. The smoke was just from some oil that had dripped onto the exhaust manifold. The over heating stopped, I'm gonna say from the head gasket. and finally got it to start Had to take the idle adjustment screw almost all the way out. But i could never get the timing to set. The notch wasnt even close to the 0 or the 5. it was more like the 10 O'clock position on the pulley. it runs rough and idles at 1100 rpm. When I tore it apart it was at TDC and i tied the chain to the sprocket and let it rest on the guides. after reassembly, i thought the timing chain had slipped a tooth, so I took the valve cover off and loosed the cam bolt preparing to scoot it over but noticed that the dimple and bright link are at the 1 oclock position. I know theyre supposed to be at the 11:59 ish position. and now that i have taken it apart, removed the dizzy, ect. I cant the the stupid truck to start. Any guesses now? it was running rough but could drive and now cant even start it, it just cranks.

I wish I was just a little closer as I am in the Denver area. Not sure I can offer anything beyond what has already been said but if I travel up north I'll send you a PM and see if you are still having trouble and maybe I can help troubleshoot.
